What Implements Calculation Groups for Direct Lake Semantic Models?
Short answer
D Use Tabular Editor to implement calculation groups in the Research division's Direct Lake semantic models.
Question
Key Takeaways
The question tests which tool implements calculation groups inside a Fabric Direct Lake semantic model, and the trap is assuming Power BI Desktop can open such a model just because Desktop now supports calculation group authoring.
Contoso's Research division semantic models must run in Direct Lake mode, so calculation groups must be authored with an XMLA modeling tool rather than Power BI Desktop. This page establishes that Tabular Editor (D) is the tool to implement calculation groups, and explains why the Power BI service and DAX Studio are not the expected answer.
Common mistake: The most common wrong pick is Microsoft Power BI Desktop (A): Desktop can now create calculation groups natively, but it cannot open a Direct Lake semantic model hosted in a Fabric workspace, so it cannot add calculation groups to the Productline1/Productline2 models.
Expert Analysis
Why the Answer Is Correct
Tabular Editor connects to the Fabric semantic model through its XMLA endpoint and writes calculation groups directly into the Tabular Object Model, which is exactly what a Direct Lake model in Productline1ws or Productline2ws needs. Calculation groups are model-level artifacts — a calculation group table plus calculation items written in DAX — so they cannot be produced by a reporting or query tool. As stilferx reasoned, Tabular Editor "offers a more efficient way to define calculation groups" and is compatible with Direct Lake, while 2dc6125 called it "the safe answer". Because the Research division models must use Direct Lake mode and cannot be opened in Power BI Desktop, Tabular Editor is the tool that actually implements the calculation group.
Why the Other Options Are Wrong
Power BI Desktop (A) can now create calculation groups natively — SKM1964 notes "Today Power BI Desktop permits the creation of Calculation Group" — but Desktop cannot open a Direct Lake semantic model stored in a Fabric workspace, so it can never touch these models. DAX Studio (C) is a DAX query and performance tool that connects for evaluation only; it is not a modeling editor and cannot add a calculation group table or calculation items. The Power BI service (B) does support calculation group authoring for Direct Lake models through model explorer, as Evincible points out, but the DP-600 scenario expects the XMLA modeling tool Tabular Editor as the implementation path for these semantic models.
Community Comment Notes
The thread splits mainly between D and A: obii answers D and links a walkthrough video, while b65ecca cites a Microsoft Learn practice question about adding a calculation group to a Lakehouse1 model with XMLA read/write that lands on the same tool. SKM1964 and zerone72 both observe that Desktop now supports calculation groups, yet zerone72 still concludes "if I was to choose one only answer I'd go for Tabular Editor". maia01 warns that "Tabular Editor breaks the data model" if you save changes and then cannot manage it from the workspace, a practical caveat worth testing in your own tenant. c51777f and Evincible argue for the service, but the majority of voters and the Direct Lake modelling focus of the case study stay with Tabular Editor.

Exam Strategy
When a case study states that a semantic model uses Direct Lake mode, eliminate any tool that would open the model as a .pbix in Power BI Desktop, and choose the XMLA-endpoint modeling tool used to author Tabular Object Model artifacts such as calculation groups.

b65ecca 👍 6 Answered DI was studying with practice assessment on Microsoft Learn's own page. I came across to a similar question: "You have a Fabric workspace that contains a lakehouse named Lakehouse1. Lakehouse1 requires additional time intelligence calculations added to its semantic model. The model has XMLA read/write permissions enabled. You need to add a calculation group to the Lakehouse1 semantic model. What should you use?" The answer is Tabular Editor and explanation is as follows: Only Tabular Editor 2/3 can currently add calculation groups to a lakehouse semantic model. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/training/modules/create-calculation-groups/

SKM1964 👍 5 Answered AI am in trouble. Today Power BI Desktop permits the creation of Calculation Group. So A seems to be a valid answer

stilferx 👍 4 Answered DIMHO, D (Tabular Editor) Requirements: The semantic models in the Research division workspaces must use Direct Lake mode. Considering Contoso's requirement to minimize implementation and maintenance effort (general requirement), Tabular Editor offers a more efficient way to define calculation groups compared to manually writing DAX code. Additionally, since calculation groups are part of the semantic model itself, they can be deployed and managed alongside the model, simplifying maintenance.

zerone72 👍 3Since a few moths ago you can create calculation group with a recent PowerBI Desktop version too. https://learn.microsoft.com/it-it/power-bi/transform-model/calculation-groups However, if I was to choose one only answer I'd go for Tabular Editor. You can create calculation group with Tabular editor since PowerBI desktop first version (years ago).

neoverma 👍 3It should be A, using BI desktop... and if minimizing implementation was not mentioned then tabular editor.

maia01 👍 1Tabular Editor breaks the data model, you will be able to manage it again ONLY via Tabular Editor and not from Fabric workspace if you save the changes. This is an existing issue with it.

c51777f 👍 1 Answered BYou can create calculation groups in the Power BI Service. Why would I need to use a third party tool or power bi desktop to do it?
