Selecting Power Apps vs Dynamics 365 for Custom Home Building
Short answer
B Use Power Apps with an industry accelerator to build custom departmental apps with minimal development effort.
Question
Key Takeaways
The question tests the distinction between specialized vertical solutions (like Project Operations) and low-code app platforms (Power Apps). The common trap is selecting a specific ERP/CRM module when the requirement emphasizes 'minimal custom development' and cross-departmental data sharing via custom apps.
This question evaluates the ability to select the appropriate Microsoft 365 or Dynamics 365 solution for a business case involving sales, construction, and warranty management. It establishes that Power Apps with industry accelerators is the optimal choice for minimal custom development.
Common mistake: Many candidates choose Dynamics 365 Project Operations because the core business is construction. However, this ignores the explicit need for separate departmental apps and the 'minimal custom development' constraint, which favors the flexibility of Power Apps.
Expert Analysis
Why the Answer Is Correct
Power Apps with an industry accelerator is the correct choice because it allows for the creation of custom applications tailored to each department (Sales, Construction, Warranty) while leveraging pre-built templates to minimize development effort. The scenario explicitly states that 'Each department must have a custom app' and requires 'minimal custom development,' which aligns perfectly with the Power Apps platform's capability to rapidly deploy solutions using accelerators like the 'Home Builder' accelerator. This approach also facilitates the required data sharing across departments through a unified Dataverse model without the rigidity of a full suite implementation.
Why the Other Options Are Wrong
Dynamics 365 Project Operations (Option D) is primarily focused on project-based work and resource management. While it fits the construction aspect, it does not inherently provide the flexible, multi-app structure required for Sales and Warranty as distinct entities with specific access controls, nor does it necessarily reduce development time compared to using accelerators. Dynamics 365 Customer Service (Option A) is designed for service desk and support scenarios, which only partially addresses the warranty needs but fails to cover the construction and sales requirements comprehensively. A canvas app with a template (Option C) lacks the depth and industry-specific logic provided by an accelerator, likely requiring more custom development to meet the complex business rules described.
Community Comment Notes
Community comments reveal a strong split between those favoring Project Operations due to the construction focus and those recognizing the broader scope. One commenter noted that 'Project Operations - would fit for the construction requirements,' highlighting the temptation to focus solely on the primary revenue driver. Another user argued that 'Customer Service - would suit for warranty requirements,' indicating a siloed view of the problem. The consensus among higher-voted comments often leans towards D, but careful reading of the 'minimal custom development' and 'custom app' constraints points to B.
Exam Strategy
Always prioritize the specific constraints in the question stem, such as 'minimal custom development' and 'custom app.' When multiple options seem plausible, look for the one that best satisfies all functional and non-functional requirements simultaneously, rather than just the primary business process.

iraelena 👍 5 Answered ACustomer Service - would suit for warranty requirements and sales contracts industry accelarator - no fit canvas app - lots of customizing Project Operations - would fit for the construction requirements I would go with Customer Service, but I am not happy with it.

mx007 👍 3 Answered DEmployees in the warranty department report that they are frequently sent to homes without knowledge of what is in scope for the project. Employees in the construction department are unable to schedule resources because they are not informed of future projects. It appears that there most of the issues related to project management, and NOT customer communication/management related issues.

ryanzombie 👍 3 Answered DTheir actual line of business is managing the construction of houses, which are project-based. Customer service comes after and I assume is a lower priority than actually completing the housing projects. Project Operations seems the best fit.
