Which Azure Storage Account Can Be Converted to ZRS?

Configure and manage storage accounts
Answer Correct answer: A — only storage1, the standard general-purpose v2 account using LRS, can be converted to zone-redundant storage (ZRS) replication.

Community Insight

This item tests the supported source account type and redundancy combination for a ZRS conversion, and the trap is assuming any redundant account (especially RA-GRS) can just be flipped to ZRS.

Azure Storage only allows a zone-redundant storage (ZRS) conversion from specific account types and replication settings, and in this table only storage1 meets them. The page establishes that storage1 — a standard general-purpose v2 account using LRS — is the answer, so option A is correct.

Choosing B, D or E by treating the RA-GRS account (storage2) as an easy ZRS candidate, because a geo-redundant account must first be changed to LRS before it can be converted, and the third account's type is not a supported ZRS source at all.

A - LRS can be converted to ZRS directly. Indirectly, you can also convert RA-GRS by first stepping down to LRS, then stepping up to ZRS. But in this case I'd say it's a NO. The premium tier also supports LRS, ZRS or Premium storage. However, there's no way to say storage 1 & storage 3 support conversion to ZRS. As such, my answer will be A.

A you can directly convert (not migrate) from LRS to ZRS for Storage Account v2 only. Premium fileshares can be also converted by performing service request. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/common/redundancy-migration?tabs=portal#storage-account-type

E. GRA/RA-GRS -> LRS -> ZRS. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/common/redundancy-migration?WT.mc_id=AZ-MVP-5000119&tabs=portal#request-a-live-migration-to-zrs-gzrs-or-ra-gzrs

StorageV2 (general purpose v2) accounts can be converted to ZRS. Storage1 and Storage2 are both StorageV2 accounts, but Storage2 uses RA-GRS, which cannot be directly converted t

E. the question is not asking what possible for direct conversation. the only choice that make sense to me is E. • Storage1 can be directly converted to ZRS. • Storage3 can also be directly converted to ZRS. • Storage2, although currently using RA-GRS, can be switched to LRS first and then converted to ZRS.

Expert Analysis

Why the Answer Is Correct

Microsoft's redundancy-migration guidance lists only certain account types as valid sources for a ZRS conversion, and the table's storage1 — a standard general-purpose v2 account running on locally-redundant storage (LRS) — is exactly that case. LRS to ZRS is an in-place live migration, so storage1 can be moved to zone-redundant replication without copying data or taking the account offline. The other two rows each fail a different prerequisite: storage2 fails on its replication setting (RA-GRS) and storage3 fails on its account type/tier as shown in the table. Because only one account satisfies both the type and redundancy conditions, the correct choice is A, "storage1 only". A learner reasoning from the documented conversion matrix reaches the same conclusion: the qualifying row is the LRS standard general-purpose v2 account.

Why the Other Options Are Wrong

Options B and D both depend on the RA-GRS account, but RA-GRS is not a supported starting point for a ZRS conversion — you must first step the account down to LRS, which is a separate change, so it cannot simply be "converted to ZRS" as the question asks. Options D and E also rely on storage3, whose account type in the table is not on the list of ZRS-capable sources. Option C ("storage3 only") fails for that same account-type reason, and option E stacks both errors by claiming all three accounts qualify. Any answer that includes the geo-redundant account or the third account therefore contradicts the documented conversion rules.

Community Comment Notes

Rediwed captured the key rule with "LRS can be converted to ZRS directly", noting that an RA-GRS account must first be stepped down to LRS, so for storage2 "in this case I'd say it's a NO". sats08 reinforces this with the documented point that only StorageV2 accounts can be converted directly, pointing readers to the Microsoft redundancy-migration article. Megabyte10 observes that storage1 and storage2 are both StorageV2 accounts but that storage2's RA-GRS "cannot be directly converted", which is precisely why B and D fail. A minority (certainly and 155e6a0) argues for E by treating RA-GRS to LRS to ZRS as one migration path, but that two-step move is a separate downgrade the question does not grant. The prevailing, documentation-backed reading of the table is storage1 only.

Exam Strategy

Scan the replication column first: a GRS or RA-GRS account should be eliminated as a direct ZRS conversion candidate before you even check account type. Then confirm the account type — standard general-purpose v2, premium block blobs or premium file shares on LRS — because a premium page-blob account cannot be zone-redundant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't the RA-GRS account (storage2) be converted to ZRS?

Geo-redundant replication is not a supported source for a ZRS conversion; the account must first be changed to LRS, so storage2 does not qualify directly in this question.

Does a premium Azure Storage account support ZRS?

Premium block blob and premium file share accounts do support ZRS, but a premium page-blob account does not — check the account type shown in the table before assuming a premium account qualifies.
