Google Cloud Storage for Disaster Recovery

Planning and implementing storage and data solutions.

Your company uses Cloud Storage to store application backup files for disaster recovery purposes. You want to follow Google's recommended practices. Which storage option should you use?

  1. Multi-Regional Storage Correct Answer
  2. Regional Storage
  3. Nearline Storage
  4. Coldline Storage
Answer Correct answer: A — Multi-Regional Storage should be used as it provides the necessary geographic redundancy and high availability required for effective disaster recovery.

Community Insight

The exam tests the distinction between cost optimization (Coldline) and reliability/availability (Multi-Regional), with the common trap being to select Coldline due to the word 'backup' without considering the 'disaster recovery' context.

This question tests the selection of Google Cloud Storage classes based on disaster recovery requirements, establishing that Multi-Regional Storage is the correct choice for high availability and durability.

Candidates often choose Coldline Storage because it is designed for long-term archival and backups, overlooking that disaster recovery requires higher availability and durability guarantees than Coldline provides.

It seems to be A as per Google's recommended practices. https://docs.cloud.google.com/backup-disaster-recovery/docs/concepts/best-practices-cyber-resilience

D is the correct answer: • Disaster Recovery = Rare Access. You only need to touch these backup files if something goes horribly wrong, which is hopefully less than once a year. • Coldline = Cheap Storage for Rare Access. Google designed Coldline specifically for data you access once a quarter or less, making it the most cost-effective choice for emergency backups. • Why not the others? Multi-Regional and Regional (A & B) are for active, everyday data and are way too expensive for backups. Nearline (C) is for data accessed once a month, which is still too frequent for a disaster recovery plan. Basically: Disaster Recovery backups = Coldline

Coldline Storage: Fits well with disaster recovery use cases where data is infrequently accessed but needs to be available relatively quickly if a disaster occurs.

Best Answer is Coldline. Please dont use to much of brain to answer this question. The question is very vague and assuming something is where most people got it wrong. Question is clear. Disaster recovery and best practices. Option A is eliminated since we need that kind of storage for frequent retrieval. Option D is best since data is retrived only when we have a DR scenario and it happen once in a blue moon. DO NOT PUT LOT OF THINKING. JUST READ THE QUESTION AND DONT ASSUME ANYTHING
ucanmanda 👍 1 Selected: A
It is Coldline Storage because question says that which Cloud Storage that you need. Not a Method that you have used.
SayujM 👍 1 Selected: A
Went of searching online and read that a full disaster recovery plan also considers: 1) Recovery Point Objective (RPO): This is the maximum amount of data (measured in time) that you are willing to lose in a disaster. For backups, your RPO dictates how frequently you need to create them. 2) Recovery Time Objective (RTO): This is the maximum amount of time that can pass after a disaster before your application or system must be available again. Your RTO influences how quickly you can restore your backups. hence we would want data to be highly available & also reasonably quick to retrieve when a disaster strikes. Considering that option of Multi-regional Standard Storage makes the most sense.
Kessel 👍 1 Selected: A
It doesn't say that we want the most economical solution. Given that multi-regional provides instant failover and availability, I would go with A. Certainly not D, because there is too much of a delay in getting back your data for retrieval.
AbsurdDragon 👍 1 Selected: A
DR needs to be tested when you do pentesting DR needs to be sanity checked at some frequency depending on the importance of your app. DR needs to be kept up to date with your app changes - regular snapshots and writes. Coldline is too expensive for regular writes and as needed reads. DR needs to be there when something catastrophic happens (or not too bad). If there's a hurricane in North Carolina that knocks google's DC out - and both your app and DR were hosted there - that sucks, ideally you should have had your DR in a couple of different regions. Thus A - multi region is the answer
Joseph_Covaro 👍 2 Selected: D
I believe Coldline Storage is the answer in absence of Archive Storage. Note how the bucket is responsible for disaster recovery, meaning it should already be in a different region from our operational data, therefore making Multi-Regional-Storage unnecessary.
vaclavbenes1 👍 1 Selected: A
ere's why: Multi-Regional Storage: This option provides the highest level of redundancy and availability. Data is replicated across multiple geographic regions, ensuring that your backups are accessible even in the event of a regional outage. This is crucial for disaster recovery scenarios where you need to restore your application quickly. Why the other options are less suitable: Regional Storage: While more cost-effective than Multi-Regional, Regional Storage stores data within a single geographic region. If that region experiences an outage, your backups will be unavailable. This is not ideal for disaster recovery. Nearline Storage and Coldline Storage: These options are designed for data that is accessed infrequently. They offer lower storage costs but have retrieval fees and higher latency. While suitable for archiving or long-term backups where immediate access isn't critical, they are not the best choice for disaster recovery where rapid restoration is essential. Restoring from Nearline or Coldline would add significant time to your recovery process.
iamshubhampatil 👍 2 Selected: A
The question focuses on "Disaster Recovery" and not cost. For disaster recovery backups in Google Cloud Storage, Multi-Regional Storage (A) is the recommended option. This storage class ensures data is replicated across multiple geographic regions, providing maximum availability and durability. This redundancy protects against regional outages and aligns with Google’s best practices for disaster recovery, which prioritize cross-region replication to minimize downtime and ensure rapid recovery
shashank_m 👍 1 Selected: A
Multi-Regional Storage provides high durability and availability by storing your data across multiple locations in different regions, which is ideal for backup and disaster recovery. It is designed for frequently accessed data but can also be suitable for critical backups that may need to be quickly restored across a wide geographic area. Regional Storage stores data in a single region, which may not be as reliable for disaster recovery in the event of a regional failure. Nearline Storage and Coldline Storage are designed for data that is infrequently accessed (e.g., archival purposes), so they are not as suitable for application backups that might need to be accessed relatively quickly in a disaster recovery scenario. Therefore, Multi-Regional Storage is the best choice for disaster recovery backups.
SteveXs 👍 2 Selected: D
While multi-regional storage ensures data durability and availability, it is not cost-efficient for backup files that are rarely accessed, such as those for disaster recovery. D is the correct answer as Coldline Storage is designed for long-term storage and infrequently accessed data (e.g., disaster recovery backups).

Ans is D. Coldline Storage: If the backups are truly for disaster scenarios and you expect very infrequent access (less than once a year). Here's how other option fits into this context: A. Multi-Regional Storage: This is best for data that is frequently accessed and needs to be highly available. It's ideal for serving content to users globally and for data that is accessed more often. B. Regional Storage: This offers high availability and is suited for storing data that is accessed frequently, but within a specific region. It's good for data used in compute operations in the same region. C. Nearline Storage: This is a low-cost option for storing infrequently accessed data. It's ideal for data that is accessed less than once a month. There are costs associated with accessing the data, so it's better for data that you don't expect to access frequently.

honestly, they should've added archive storage because it is better suited for disaster recovery backup. It is also stated in the doc how archive is better choice than 'coldline storage'. Also in terms of latency, archive will take care of that in events of disaster; as stated in the doc, "In the event of a disaster recovery event, recovery time is key. Cloud Storage provides low latency access to data stored as Archive storage." https://cloud.google.com/storage/docs/storage-classes#archive

DISASTER RECOVERY!!! Multi-Regional Storage indeed offers the highest level of durability and availability among the storage classes in Google Cloud Storage. It is specifically designed to store data that is geographically distributed and needs a high level of reliability. By replicating the data in at least two separate regions, it ensures that data remains accessible even if one entire region goes offline. Given this context, for disaster recovery purposes where the highest level of availability and durability is required, Multi-Regional Storage is the recommended storage class. So, the correct choice is: A. Multi-Regional Storage.

To follow Google's recommended practices for storing application backup files for disaster recovery purposes, the appropriate storage option would be: B. Regional Storage. Explanation: Google recommends using Regional Storage for backup files because it provides both durability and lower latency for regional disaster recovery scenarios. Regional Storage ensures that your data is stored redundantly across multiple zones within a specific region, providing high availability and resilience against zone-level failures. It offers a balance between durability, availability, and cost-effectiveness, making it suitable for backup and disaster recovery purposes. Regional Storage is typically more cost-effective than Multi-Regional Storage while still offering a high level of reliability. Therefore, option B is the recommended choice when following Google's best practices for storing application backup files for disaster recovery purposes.

nikila99 👍 1
Answer is A , Coldline Storage may be less expensive than other storage options, but it has higher latency and a longer retrieval time, which may not be suitable for disaster recovery purposes where data needs to be quickly retrieved and restored. For disaster recovery purposes, it is recommended to use Multi-Regional Storage which provides high availability and durability of data.
JoniMONI 👍 3 Selected: C
The correct answer would depend on the specific requirements of the backup files. If the backup files need to be accessed infrequently and data retrieval within several hours or days is acceptable, then Coldline Storage would be the most cost-effective option. If the backup files need to be accessed within seconds and the cost is not a concern, then Nearline Storage would be a suitable option. If the backup files need to be accessible at all times and the cost is not a concern, then Multi-Regional Storage would be the best option as it provides high durability and availability, as well as low latency access to your data. It is important to consider the specific requirements of your backup files and choose the storage option that best meets those needs.

Multi-Regional Storage is a good option for frequently accessed data that requires high availability and low latency, such as user-generated content for a popular website or mobile application. However, for backup files for disaster recovery purposes, data is not expected to be accessed frequently, and high availability and low latency are not the main requirements. Therefore, Coldline Storage is a more cost-effective option for backup files for disaster recovery purposes.

• D. Coldline Storage Coldline storage is a very low cost highly durable storage service for data archiving, online backup, and disaster recovery. Coldline storage is the best choice for data that you plan to access at most once a year due to its slightly lower availability, 90 day minimum storage duration cost for data access, and higher per operation costs. Nearline and Coldline are for backup and archival storage and having the highest availability for both with 99.9 percent. For example, if you want to archive data or have access in the event of a disaster recovery event. As for pricing, all storage classes incur a cost per gigabyte of data stored per month with Multi-regional having the highest storage price, and Coldline having lowest storage price. Egress and data transfer charges may also apply. In addition to those charges, Nearline storage also incurs an access fee per gigabyte of data read, and Coldline storage incurs a higher fee per gigabyte of data read.
JohnnyS20 👍 5
Correct answer: Multi-regional Most people are trapped immediately by the keyword 'backup' and the need to lower down the cost. While keeping the cost down is a must in every decision we make, the real keyword here is 'DR - Disaster Recovery' When you're talking about DR, you are assuming that a disaster which may cause an entire datacenter or even a region to go down may happen anytime. This means the backups must be stored somewhere that is HIGHLY AVAILABLE. If we're talking "Highly available", then we can already go straight to Multi-regional storage as your backups are safely stored in another region in case the primary region goes down

Expert Analysis

Why the Answer Is Correct

Multi-Regional Storage is the correct answer because it provides the highest level of durability and availability, which is critical for disaster recovery scenarios. It replicates data across at least two distinct regions, ensuring that if one region experiences a catastrophic failure, the data remains accessible from another region. This aligns with Google's recommended practices for DR where business continuity is paramount.

Why the Other Options Are Wrong

Coldline Storage (D) and Nearline Storage (C) are designed for infrequently accessed data and cost optimization, not for immediate availability during a disaster. Regional Storage (B) offers high durability but only within a single region, meaning it cannot protect against a regional outage, which is the specific risk DR aims to mitigate.

Community Comment Notes

The community is divided, with many users selecting Coldline due to the keyword 'backup'. However, experienced commentators emphasize that 'Disaster Recovery' implies a need for high availability and multi-region resilience, pointing to Multi-Regional Storage. As noted by user JohnnyS20, focusing on 'DR' rather than just 'backup' leads to the correct conclusion.

Official Reference

Exam Strategy

Always prioritize the primary objective stated in the scenario. If 'Disaster Recovery' or 'High Availability' is mentioned, look for options that offer redundancy across multiple regions. If 'Cost Optimization' or 'Archival' is the focus, consider Nearline or Coldline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why isn't Coldline Storage suitable for disaster recovery?
