PoE and Injectors for Data and Power

Compare and contrast common networking hardware devices

Which of the following can carry data and electricity to network devices? (Choose two.)

  1. Router
  2. Injector Correct Answer
  3. Cable modem
  4. Access point
  5. PoE Correct Answer
  6. Unmanaged switch
Answer Correct answer: B, E — Power over Ethernet (PoE) is the technology that enables Ethernet cables to carry electrical power along with data, and a PoE injector is the hardware device used to add this power to a non-PoE network segment.

Community Insight

The question tests knowledge of networking hardware and standards by asking which options enable dual transmission; the trap is confusing the standard (PoE) with the enabling device (Injector).

Power over Ethernet (PoE) is the technology that allows network cables to transmit both electrical power and data, while a PoE injector is the hardware device used to add this capability to non-PoE networks.

Learners often select 'Access point' or 'Switch' because these devices utilize PoE, but they do not inherently define the mechanism of carrying electricity and data together in the context of the question's phrasing.

E is very obvious to me because it’s Power over Ethernet, its allows Ethernet cables to carry electrical power and data to devices.EG IP cameras but Injector is also a PoE because it adds electric power to an Ethernet cable while carrying the data to a network device.

119. B & E — Injector + PoE 🧸 A PoE injector adds electricity to Ethernet, and PoE carries data and power together. ⚡🌐

The correct answers are B. Injector and E. PoE. Why Injector and PoE? These two terms directly describe the hardware and the technology used to combine data and power onto a single Ethernet cable. E. PoE (Power over Ethernet): This is the actual technology standard (like IEEE 802.3af/at/bt) that defines how electrical power is transmitted along with data on twisted-pair Ethernet cabling. It allows devices to receive power without needing a nearby AC outlet. B. Injector: Also known as a "midspan" device, a PoE injector is a piece of hardware used when you have a non-PoE switch but need to power a PoE-capable device (like a VoIP phone or camera). You plug a standard data cable from the switch into the injector, plug the injector into a power outlet, and it "injects" electricity into the cable before sending it out to the device.

E. PoE & B. Injector ExamTopics clearly biffed the format of this question but the answer would obviously be PoE and an Injector.

E. An injector is a device used to add power over ethernet to a non power over ethernet Network it's a tool not the actual technology. So it will leave us with power over ethernet which carries both data and electrical power over a standard ethernet cable.

Injector and PoE

B. Injector A PoE injector adds electrical current to the data signal on an Ethernet cable. Useful when your network switch doesn’t support built-in PoE. Ideal for retrofitting non-PoE infrastructure. E. PoE (Power over Ethernet) A technology standard that enables Ethernet cables to carry power. Supported directly by PoE-capable switches, or via injectors. Allows installation of network devices without access to nearby electrical outlets.

Expert Analysis

Why the Answer Is Correct

The correct answers are B. Injector and E. PoE. PoE (Power over Ethernet) is the IEEE standard/technology that defines how electrical power is carried alongside data on twisted-pair Ethernet cabling. A PoE injector is a specific hardware device used to combine power and data onto a single cable when the connected switch does not support PoE natively. Both options directly address the capability described in the question.

Why the Other Options Are Wrong

A Router (A), Cable modem (C), Access point (D), and Unmanaged switch (F) are network devices. While many modern switches and access points support PoE, the devices themselves are not the definition of the technology that carries electricity and data; rather, they are endpoints or intermediate nodes that may utilize it. An access point typically receives power via PoE or a separate adapter; it does not inherently carry electricity to other devices unless it is a PoE source, but even then, 'PoE' and 'Injector' are the more precise terms for the mechanism itself.

Community Comment Notes

Community consensus strongly favors B and E. Users note that 'PoE' is the obvious technology answer. Regarding the 'Injector', comments clarify that it is the physical tool used to inject power into the line, making it the complementary hardware answer to the technological standard of PoE. One user noted that exam sources sometimes have formatting issues, but the technical logic holds for B and E.

Exam Strategy

When asked what 'carries' data and electricity, look for the standard name (PoE) and the primary hardware method of implementation (Injector or PSE-enabled Switch). Distinguish between the technology/standard and the end-device that consumes the power.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is an Access Point incorrect?

An AP is a device that connects wirelessly; it is an endpoint that often receives power via PoE, but it is not the mechanism that defines carrying power and data.

What is the difference between PoE and an Injector?

PoE is the IEEE standard/technology for transmitting power over Ethernet. An Injector is a physical device that implements this technology by combining power and data signals.
