Oracle Flex ASM Relocation Behavior with srvctl relocate asm

ASM architecture and Flex ASM
Answer Correct answer: B, D — The command succeeds, starts an ASM instance on HOST02, keeps HOST03 running until clients disconnect, and allows 19c instances to reconnect to HOST02.

Examine the output of the asmcmd and srvctl commands: Then you execute this command: $ srvctl relocate asm -currentnode host03 -targetnode host02 Which three statements are true regarding the execution of this command based on the output shown? (Choose three.) - image

  1. It fails because the ASM instance has not been shut down first on HOST03.
  2. It succeeds and starts an ASM instance on HOST02 but the ASM instance on HOST03 is not shut down until all connected clients disconnect. Correct Answer
  3. It succeeds and starts an ASM instance on HOST02 and shuts down the ASM instance on HOST03.
  4. It succeeds and 19c database instances connected to the ASM instance on HOST03 can be reconnected to the ASM instance on HOST02. Correct Answer
  5. It succeeds and 19c database instances connected to the ASM instance on HOST03 can be reconnected to the ASM instance on HOST01.

Community Insight

The question tests knowledge of the 'drain' process in Flex ASM and automatic client reconnection capabilities. The common trap is confusing the graceful shutdown sequence (Option B) with an immediate shutdown (Option C) or misidentifying the target for client reconnection.

This question tests the behavior of Oracle Flex ASM during an instance relocation using srvctl. It establishes that a successful relocation starts a new instance on the target node while gracefully draining the source node, allowing connected database instances to reconnect automatically.

Many learners choose Option C, assuming the old ASM instance shuts down immediately upon starting the new one. Others struggle between Options D and E, failing to recognize that clients reconnect to the *new* active ASM instance (HOST02), not the old one or an unrelated node.

A: true B: false, it will delete the -current node by itself. C: false, compared to D, host03 will be closed only after the ASM client on currentnode leaves. D: true E: false, compared to A F: true, the ASM instance setting is 2, it is possible that host02 does not have config in ASM.  ADF

It just cannot be F - simply because it's opossite to literally every other answer, and you need 3.

I have found from documentation F is correct. You can also use SRVCTL to determine whether Oracle Flex ASM is enabled. If enabled, then srvctl config asm displays the number of Oracle ASM instances that has been specified for use with the Oracle Flex ASM configuration.

B. Correct because the relocation process involves starting the ASM instance on the target node (HOST02) and not shutting down the ASM instance on the current node (HOST03) until all clients have disconnected. C. Correct because once the ASM instance is started on HOST02 and all clients have disconnected from HOST03, the ASM instance on HOST03 is shut down. D. Correct because after the relocation, database instances can reconnect to the ASM instance now running on HOST02. E. Incorrect because the ASM instance is being relocated to HOST02, not HOST01. Thus, database instances should reconnect to HOST02, not HOST01.

I vote BDF. Why F? You can also use SRVCTL to determine whether Oracle Flex ASM is enabled. If enabled, then srvctl config asm displays the number of Oracle ASM instances that has been specified for use with the Oracle Flex ASM configuration. For example: Copy $ srvctl config asm ASM instance count: 3

Expert Analysis

Why the Answer Is Correct

The srvctl relocate asm command facilitates the migration of an ASM instance from one node to another in an Oracle Flex ASM configuration. When executed successfully, it performs a specific sequence: first, it starts a new ASM instance on the target node (HOST02). Second, it places the current ASM instance on HOST03 into a 'drain' state, meaning it continues running but stops accepting new connections. Third, existing client database instances (like the 19c DBs shown) are automatically disconnected from the draining instance and reconnect to the newly started ASM instance on HOST02. Only after all clients have disconnected does the ASM instance on HOST03 shut down. Therefore, Option B is correct because it accurately describes the start on HOST02 and the delayed shutdown on HOST03. Option D is correct because the 19c instances will reconnect to the new service provided by HOST02.

Why the Other Options Are Wrong

Option A is incorrect because the command handles the shutdown/restart logic internally; you do not manually shut down the ASM instance first. Option C is incorrect because it states the ASM instance on HOST03 shuts down immediately, ignoring the critical drain phase required for zero-downtime client reconnection. Option E is incorrect because clients reconnect to the active ASM instance providing the service, which is now on HOST02, not HOST01.

Community Comment Notes

Community feedback highlights confusion regarding the timing of the shutdown. As user lcoleandro noted, "the relocation process involves starting the ASM instance on the target node... and not shutting down the ASM instance on the current node... until all clients have disconnected." This confirms the validity of Option B over Option C. Some users incorrectly suggested Option F (referencing documentation checks), but since the question asks about the execution of the relocate command specifically, and only three options are allowed, B and D are the definitive operational outcomes. User jackhsu0704 correctly identified that ADF was wrong because A is false and F is irrelevant to the execution result.

Exam Strategy

When dealing with Oracle Flex ASM relocation questions, always look for keywords like 'drain', 'reconnect', and 'target node'. Remember that Flex ASM allows multiple nodes to access storage, so relocation is about moving the instance role, not losing access. The key is that the new instance starts first, and the old one waits for clients to leave.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't the ASM instance on HOST03 shut down immediately?

It enters a 'drain' state to allow connected database instances to gracefully reconnect to the new ASM instance on HOST02 without dropping connections.

Do database instances reconnect to HOST01 or HOST02?

They reconnect to HOST02, as it is the new node hosting the active ASM instance that provides the storage services.
